Occluded Mica in Hydroxy-Interlayered Vermiculite Grains from a Highly-Weathered Soil

Hydroxy-interlayered vermiculite (HIV) is a ubiquitous phyllosilicate in the <0.05-mm fraction of sandy soils on the U.S. southeastern coastal plain. Extensive areas of soils with abundant HIV (i.e., peninsular Florida) have no detectable mica; yet the coarseness, platy habit, and nonexchangeable K associated with HIV grains suggest a mica precursor. The objectives of this study were: (1) to probe for mica zones (1.0-nm) within HIV grains, using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and (2) to determine intragrain elemental distributions via electron microprobe analysis (EMA). HIV grains from a Quartzipsamment medium-silt fraction, which contained no detectable mica by X-ray diffraction (XRD), were concentrated via high-density liquid separation. EMA transects and X-ray dot maps showed zonation or trends of K depletion near edges of some grains, with K2O contents ranging from trace levels to >40 g kg-1. Elemental oxide data indicated a dioctahedral phyllosilicate structure, with some octahedral substitution of Fe and Mg for Al. Intermittent 1.0-nm lattice-fringe images obtained by HRTEM supported the presence of mica zones within grains. There were no detectable 1.4-nm fringes, despite the dominance of a 1.4-nm XRD peak, indicating the instability of the HIV specimen under the electron beam. Results support a transformational link between mica and HIV in these soils. Rapid incursion and polymerization of Al following loss of K from mica may limit the extent of the vermiculite intermediate. The latter idea is consistent with the paucity of vermiculite in Florida soils. Traces of occluded mica may be the last remnants of the precursor grain. A sand-sized mica precursor would likely have weathered in place during the period when colloidal components such as kaolinite illuviated to deeper zones. Thus, the transformation product (HIV) would comprise a significant proportion of the <0.05-mm fraction persisting in sandy eluvial horizons.

Objective:
White matter hyperintensity (WMH) burden is greater, has a frontal-temporal distribution, and is associated with proxies of exposure to repetitive head impacts (RHI) in former American football players. These findings suggest that in the context of RHI, WMH might have unique etiologies that extend beyond those of vascular risk factors and normal aging processes. The objective of this study was to evaluate the correlates of WMH in former elite American football players. We examined markers of amyloid, tau, neurodegeneration, inflammation, axonal injury, and vascular health and their relationships to WMH. A group of age-matched asymptomatic men without a history of RHI was included to determine the specificity of the relationships observed in the former football players.
Participants and Methods:240 male participants aged 45-74 (60 unexposed asymptomatic men, 60 male former college football players, 120 male former professional football players) underwent semi-structured clinical interviews, magnetic resonance imaging (structural T1, T2 FLAIR, and diffusion tensor imaging), and lumbar puncture to collect cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers as part of the DIAGNOSE CTE Research Project. Total WMH lesion volumes (TLV) were estimated using the Lesion Prediction Algorithm from the Lesion Segmentation Toolbox. Structural equation modeling, using Full-Information Maximum Likelihood (FIML) to account for missing values, examined the associations between log-TLV and the following variables: total cortical thickness, whole-brain average fractional anisotropy (FA), CSF amyloid ß42, CSF p-tau181, CSF sTREM2 (a marker of microglial activation), CSF neurofilament light (NfL), and the modified Framingham stroke risk profile (rFSRP). Covariates included age, race, education, APOE z4 carrier status, and evaluation site. Bootstrapped 95% confidence intervals assessed statistical significance. Models were performed separately for football players (college and professional players pooled; n=180) and the unexposed men (n=60). Due to differences in sample size, estimates were compared and were considered different if the percent change in the estimates exceeded 10%.
Results:In the former football players (mean age=57.2, 34% Black, 29% APOE e4 carrier), reduced cortical thickness (B=-0.25, 95% CI [0.45, -0.08]), lower average FA (B=-0.27, 95% CI [-0.41, -.12]), higher p-tau181 (B=0.17, 95% CI [0.02, 0.43]), and higher rFSRP score (B=0.27, 95% CI [0.08, 0.42]) were associated with greater log-TLV. Compared to the unexposed men, substantial differences in estimates were observed for rFSRP (Bcontrol=0.02, Bfootball=0.27, 994% difference), average FA (Bcontrol=-0.03, Bfootball=-0.27, 802% difference), and p-tau181 (Bcontrol=-0.31, Bfootball=0.17, -155% difference). In the former football players, rFSRP showed a stronger positive association and average FA showed a stronger negative association with WMH compared to unexposed men. The effect of WMH on cortical thickness was similar between the two groups (Bcontrol=-0.27, Bfootball=-0.25, 7% difference).
Conclusions:These results suggest that the risk factor and biological correlates of WMH differ between former American football players and asymptomatic individuals unexposed to RHI. In addition to vascular risk factors, white matter integrity on DTI showed a stronger relationship with WMH burden in the former football players. FLAIR WMH serves as a promising measure to further investigate the late multifactorial pathologies of RHI.
How engagement of a diverse set of stakeholders shaped the design, implementation, and dissemination of a multicenter pragmatic trial of stroke transitional care: The COMPASS study

Evidence is limited on how to synthesize and incorporate the views of stakeholders into a multisite pragmatic trial and how much academic teams change study design and protocol in response to stakeholder input. This qualitative study describes how stakeholders contributed to the design, conduct, and dissemination of findings of a multisite pragmatic clinical trial, the COMprehensive Post-Acute Stroke Services (COMPASS) Study. We engaged stakeholders as integral research partners by embedding them in study committees and community resource networks that supported local sites. Data stemmed from formal focus groups and continuous participation in working groups. Guided by Grounded Theory, we extracted themes from focus group and meeting notes. These were discussed as a team and with other stakeholder groups for feasibility. A consensus approach was used. Stakeholder input changed many aspects of the study including: the care model that treated stroke as a chronic condition after hospital discharge, training for hospital-based providers who often lacked awareness of the barriers to recovery that patients face, support for caregivers who were essential for stroke patients’ recovery, and for community-based health and social service providers whose services can support recovery yet often go underutilized. Stakeholders brought value to both pragmatic research and health service delivery. Future studies should test the impact of elements of study implementation informed by stakeholders vs those that are not.
Development of a comprehensive, sustained community mental health system in post-earthquake Haiti, 2010–2019

Between 2010 and 2019 the international health care organization Partners In Health (PIH) and its sister organization Zanmi Lasante (ZL) mounted a long-term response to the 2010 Haiti earthquake, focused on mental health. Over that time, implementing a Theory of Change developed in 2012, the organization successfully developed a comprehensive, sustained community mental health system in Haiti's Central Plateau and Artibonite departments, directly serving a catchment area of 1.5 million people through multiple diagnosis-specific care pathways. The resulting ZL mental health system delivered 28 184 patient visits and served 6305 discrete patients at ZL facilities between January 2016 and September 2019. The experience of developing a system of mental health services in Haiti that currently provides ongoing care to thousands of people serves as a case study in major challenges involved in global mental health delivery. The essential components of the effort to develop and sustain this community mental health system are summarized.

Summary
The rocky shores of the north-east Atlantic have been long studied. Our focus is from Gibraltar to Norway plus the Azores and Iceland. Phylogeographic processes shape biogeographic patterns of biodiversity. Long-term and broadscale studies have shown the responses of biota to past climate fluctuations and more recent anthropogenic climate change. Inter- and intra-specific species interactions along sharp local environmental gradients shape distributions and community structure and hence ecosystem functioning. Shifts in domination by fucoids in shelter to barnacles/mussels in exposure are mediated by grazing by patellid limpets. Further south fucoids become increasingly rare, with species disappearing or restricted to estuarine refuges, caused by greater desiccation and grazing pressure. Mesoscale processes influence bottom-up nutrient forcing and larval supply, hence affecting species abundance and distribution, and can be proximate factors setting range edges (e.g., the English Channel, the Iberian Peninsula). Impacts of invasive non-native species are reviewed. Knowledge gaps such as the work on rockpools and host–parasite dynamics are also outlined.
Outbreak characteristics associated with identification of contributing factors to foodborne illness outbreaks

Information on the factors that cause or amplify foodborne illness outbreaks (contributing factors), such as ill workers or cross-contamination of food by workers, is critical to outbreak prevention. However, only about half of foodborne illness outbreaks reported to the United States’ Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have an identified contributing factor, and data on outbreak characteristics that promote contributing factor identification are limited. To address these gaps, we analyzed data from 297 single-setting outbreaks reported to CDC's new outbreak surveillance system, which collects data from the environmental health component of outbreak investigations (often called environmental assessments), to identify outbreak characteristics associated with contributing factor identification. These analyses showed that outbreak contributing factors were more often identified when an outbreak etiologic agent had been identified, when the outbreak establishment prepared all meals on location and served more than 150 meals a day, when investigators contacted the establishment to schedule the environmental assessment within a day of the establishment being linked with an outbreak, and when multiple establishment visits were made to complete the environmental assessment. These findings suggest that contributing factor identification is influenced by multiple outbreak characteristics, and that timely and comprehensive environmental assessments are important to contributing factor identification. They also highlight the need for strong environmental health and food safety programs that have the capacity to complete such environmental assessments during outbreak investigations.
Interfacial Properties of Three Different Bioactive Dentine Substitutes

Three different bioactive materials suitable as dentine substitutes in tooth repair have been studied: glass-ionomer cement, particulate bioglass, and calcium-silicate cement. On 15 permanent human molars, Class V cavities were prepared and the bottom of each cavity was de-mineralized by an artificial caries gel. After the de-mineralization, the teeth were restored with: (1) Bioglass®45S5 and ChemFil® Superior; (2) Biodentine™ and ChemFil® Superior; and (3) ChemFil® Superior for a complete repair. The teeth were stored for 6 weeks in artificial saliva, then cut in half along the longitudinal axis: the first half was imaged in a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and the other half was embedded in resin and analyzed by SEM using energy-dispersive X-ray analysis. The glass-ionomer and the bioglass underwent ion exchange with the surrounding tooth tissue, confirming their bioactivity. However, the particle size of the bioglass meant that cavity adaptation was poor. It is concluded that smaller particle size bioglasses may give more acceptable results. In contrast, both the glass-ionomer and the calcium-silicate cements performed well as dentine substitutes. The glass-ionomer showed ion exchange properties, whereas the calcium silicate gave an excellent seal resulting from its micromechanical attachment.

On 6 November 2001, a possible case of leptospirosis was notified in a canoeist following a white-water event on the River Liffey. It emerged that a second race participant was also a possible case. An outbreak control team coordinated the epidemiological investigation, laboratory investigation, environmental assessment, communication and control measures. A cluster of six laboratory-confirmed cases of leptospirosis, serologically Leptospira interrogans serogroup Icterohaemorrhagiae was found. The attack rate was 9·2% (6/65). Fever, chills, red eyes and shortness of breath were significantly associated with being a confirmed case. Five cases were hospitalized. Swallowing more than one mouthful of water was associated with an increased risk of developing leptospirosis. Increased rainfall and release of hydroelectric water may have contributed to this outbreak. A multidisciplinary approach and use of the Internet and e-mail facilitated rapid and effective communication.

The ion damage produced in alloys of AlxGa1−xAs (x = 0.6, 0.7, 0.8, and 0.85) by implantation at 77 K with Kr ions (500, 700, and 1500 keV) was studied by using Rutherford backscattering channeling and transmission electron microscopy. In addition, the accumulation of ion damage at 50 K was studied by performing the ion implantations in situ in the transmission electron microscope. In Al0.8Ga0.2As, damage accumulation at 77 K was independent of dose rate, indicating that dynamic annealing is not occurring at 77 K. The in situ studies demonstrated that planar defects are produced on warm-up from 50 K to room temperature, indicating that they are not the nucleation site for amorphization. The lower energy implantations revealed that amorphization initiated within the AlxGa1−xAs layer, showing that heterointerfaces are not required for amorphization. These results, along with the similarity of the room-temperature microstructures in the different alloys, imply that the amorphization mechanism is independent of Al content. It is proposed that the observed dependence of the amorphization dose on Al content is related to an increase in the number of cascade overlaps needed to initiate and to produce a continuous amorphous layer. A mechanism explaining the microstructural changes with composition, based on the thermal and physical properties of the alloy and on the distribution of energetic cascade events, is presented.
Immunolocalisation of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in human neonatal growth plate cartilage

Angiogenesis is essential for the replacement of cartilage by bone during growth and repair. In order to obtain a better understanding of the mechanisms regulating vascular invasion at sites of endochondral ossification we have investigated the expression of the endothelial cell-specific mitogen, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), by chondrocytes in human neonatal growth plates. VEGF was absent from chondrocytes in the resting zone and only weakly expressed by occasional chondrocytes in the proliferating region. In the hypertrophic zone the number of chondrocytes stained and the intensity of staining for VEGF increased with chondrocyte hypertrophy, maximum expression of VEGF being observed in chondrocytes in the lower hypertrophic and mineralised regions of the cartilage. These observations provide the first demonstration of the presence of VEGF in situ in developing human bone and are consistent with in vitro observations demonstrating the upregulation of proangiogenic growth factor production with increasing chondrocyte hypertrophy. The presence of numerous small blood vessels and vascular structures in the subchondral region where VEGF expression was maximal indicates that VEGF produced by hypertrophic chondrocytes may play a key role in the regulation of vascular invasion of the growth plate.

Modification of materials by ion beams creates defects and defect formation processes. The implantation of nitrogen into titanium influences the hydrogen content in this metal. Hydrogen accumulation enhances hydrogenations in the implanted region. This effect may have important consequences, because excessive hydrogen accumulation generally leads to precipitating hydrids in the matrix lattice and the metal undergoes degradation of its mechanical properties. Many studies have shown that defects in metals trap light gas atoms like H or He which are solved or implanted in the sample. Therefore, the decoration of defects with these atoms is a method to trace defect concentrations and to study the trapping and detrapping mechanism. Mobile defects can be trapped at implanted atoms, at inhomogeneities or at inner surfaces like grain boundaries or interfaces of different phases. Using the slow positron beam technique the traps for hydrogen attributed to vacancy-type defects have been investigated in cp-Ti implanted with nitrogen or carbon.
The concentration of hydrogen has been detected by the 15N profiling technique (1H(15N,αγ)12C). The nitrogen and carbon content were measured by 15N(1H,αγ)12C and 13C(p,γ)14N reaction, respectively.

The transition from Al to Cu for advanced ULSI interconnects involves changes in architecture and deposition technique that will influence the microstructure and texture of the metal. Cu interconnects are typically formed within the confines of pre-patterned trenches and vias using an electroplating process with a sputtered Cu conduction layer deposited over a refractory metalbased diffusion barrier layer. In this paper, we focus on the influence of the barrier layer (PVD Ti/TiN, Ta, TaN, CVD TiN) and the effect of a vacuum break between barrier and conduction layer depositions, on the texture of the Cu lines, as examined by X-ray diffraction pole figure analysis.
A preferred (111) orientation was observed for all samples. The samples with no vacuum break between barrier and conduction layer deposition exhibited in plane anisotropy that was particularly pronounced for the Ta and TaN samples compared with the Ti/TiN sample. Focused ion beam images and transmission electron micrographs showed Cu grain size to be on the order of the trench width with a high degree of twinning, and no boundary could be distinguished between the PVD Cu conduction layer and the electroplated Cu.
A correspondence between product-form batch-movement queueing networks and single-movement networks

A number of recent papers have exhibited classes of queueing networks, with batches of customers served and routed through the network, which have generalised product-form equilibrium distributions. In this paper we look at these from a new viewpoint. In particular we show that, under standard assumptions, for a network to possess an equilibrium distribution that factorises into a product form over the nodes of the network for all possible transition rates, it is necessary and sufficient that it be equivalent to a suitably-defined single-movement network. We consider also the form of the state space for such networks.

Bulk ion implantations of AlxGa1-xAs (x = 0.6 or 0.85) were performed at 77 K with 1.5 MeV Kr+, 1 MeV Ar+ or 1.5 MeV++ ions, and the resulting damage state examined by using Rutherford backscattering spectrometry-channeling at 77 K and 293 K and transmission electron microscopy at 300 K. Amorphization of a portion of the A1xGa1-x As layer occurred at 77 K only for the 1.5 MeV Kr+ implantation, although the dose required to cause amorphization was higher for the higher Al content alloy. TRIM calculations[10–11] show that with this implantation the density of high energy density cascades varies as a function of depth through the layer and that these are superimposed on a high, uniform density of defects. Comparison of the ion channeling spectra at 77 K and 293 K shows that recovery occurs over a portion of the layer in the Al0.6Ga0.4As but is not detected in the A10.85Ga0.15As layer. In both alloys, the room temperature microstructure consists of an amorphous and a crystalline region. The amorphous region extends from the deeper AlxGa1-xAs/GaAs interface into the layer, and is separated from the crystalline material by a crystalline region containing planar defects. The difference between the alloys is in the extent of this latter region, which decreases in width with increasing Al content. These results will be used to examine current models for amorphization in the AlxGa1-xAs system.

Substrate Temperature Effects on Properties of Silicon Nitride Films Deposited by Ion Beam Assisted Deposition

Silicon nitride films (Si1−x,.Nx) have been deposited on silicon by simultaneous evaporation of silicon and bombardment of nitrogen ions. Films approximately 1 μm thick were deposited in an ambient nitrogen pressure of 50 μTorr. The substrate temperature (TSUB) ranged from nominally room temperature to 950° C for films with X between 0 and 0.6. Nitrogen atom fraction, X, was measured with Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS). Refractive index was measured with near-IR reflection spectroscopy. Differences in film structure were measured by FT1R on the Si-N bond bending absorption mode, and by x-ray diffraction (XRD). X was found to depend upon the incident flux ratio of energetic nitrogen atoms to vapor silicon, and upon TSUB. Refractive index depends upon X and TSUB. XRD found evidence of the presence of amorphous structure, poly-crystalline silicon and (101) oriented β-Si3N4 depending on X and TSUB. The Si-N absorption signal increases with X and shows some structure at high TSUB.
